The Perimeter is one food insider’s guide to navigating the grocery store and beyond with health and affordability as its guiding tenets. Drawing inspiration from the well worn adage to “shop the perimeter,” which implores people to fill their carts with the nutrient dense food options found along the edge of the grocery store, this newsletter gives readers the tools to look critically upon the food they put on their plates and into their bodies.

You’re likely wondering, who am I to offer advice? I’ve worked with artisan makers in the UK, as a winemaking intern in Sonoma, at a San Francisco marketing agency with food tech brands, consumer packaged goods, restaurants and cookbook authors and I’m currently the Chief Marketing Officer at Drink Wholesome, maker of simple ingredient protein powders for sensitive stomachs. In my free time, I volunteer frequently at food banks, soup kitchens and as a board member for a Naturally Northern California. I also eat three meals a day and probably a snack or two.

My obsession is founded in a insatiable drive to answer the question:

Why do we eat what we do when we know it’s bad for us?

One theme continually emerges…

Let’s break (up with Wonder) bread, together.

Pull up your chair. Take a seat. We’re here to talk about Ultra Processed Food.

Ultra Processed Food (to be defined shortly) is the diseased and beating heart of this newsletter. At 27 years old, my peers and I have grown up in a food environment characterized by convenience and profit for big food companies. We pay with our wallets, our health and our natural environment. No, thank you.

So let’s push back, the best way we know how. Inside you’ll find:

  • Deep dives into the food on our shelves, in our freezers and at the drive-in

  • Answers to the question: So, what can I eat?

  • A weekly recipe that breaks down one affordable, healthy meal

Subscribers to get juicy insights (yes, even the slimy innards big food doesn’t want you to know about) straight to your inbox and access to the archives. If that’s not a sell I don’t know what is!!!!
